Giorgi Margvelashvili, the former President of Georgia, on Tuesday denied rumours that he was becoming the Chair of the opposition United National Movement party, calling the information a “one hundred percent lie”.

Rustavi 2 channel reported on Tuesday that Margvelashvili, who accompanied UNM members on their recent visit to Ukraine, had been offered the position..

It is a 100 percent lie. I say 100 percent, because there has been no offer, no discussion and no decision of mine. It is a 100 percent fictional story,” Margvelashvili told the press.

Irakli Kobakhidze, the head of the ruling Georgian Dream party, said the UNM needed Margvelashvili’s candidacy to “get rid” of Nika Melia, the current Chair of the party.

We have known for a long time that Saakashvili is jealous of Melia and others, and naturally, he would like to get rid of Melia, who is a formal Chairman to this day. The actual leader of this party will certainly be Saakashvili again,” Kobakhidze added.

Margvelashvili served as the President of Georgia from 2013 to 2018 but declines to run for a second term.

In 2020, he announced his return to politics, but refrained from disclosing further details of his political plans.

Saakashvili is currently serving a prison sentence and is facing more charges relating to his time in the UNM government.
