Tskhinvali hopes that like Russia, Venezuela, Nauru and Syria, Afghanistan under the Taliban will also recognise it ‘as an independent state.’
Issues related to both countries, regional security and the situation in Afghanistan as well as recent developments were discussed at the meeting,” Naeem tweeted.
According to local media, Maksimov was invited from Russia and took the post in Tskhinvali shortly before.
Russia recognised Abkhazia and Tskhinvali of Georgia as independent states after the Russia-Georgia 2008 war.
Since then only Venezuela, Nicaragua, Nauru and Syria have joined Russia in the recognition, while the rest of the international community call upon the country to leave the Georgian territory.
