Ombudswoman: Georgia must not extradite Ukrainian combatant to Russia

Georgian Public Defender Nino Lomjaria has appealed to the country’s Prosecutor’s Office not to request the Ukrainian citizen Vadim Altman to be extradited to Russia.

Russia accuses Altman of forming an illegal armed group and drug crimes and demanded his extradition in January 2020.
Lomjaria says that Altman participated in the Russia-Ukraine armed conflict and he is likely to become a subject of ill-treatment if extradited to Russia.
Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili says that she is ready to visit Ukraine ‘as soon as possible’ for the ‘best future interests’ of both countries, noting that the statements made by former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili, who currently chairs the executive committee of the Ukrainian National Reforms Council, are ‘affecting bilateral relations’.
NATO Foreign Ministers have decided to deepen their partnerships with Georgia and Ukraine including with exercises in the strategic Black Sea region. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said this includes joint work to counter hybrid warfare, as well as efforts to share more air traffic radar data, “making the skies safer for all”.
Georgia and Ukraine have agreed to make it possible for their citizens to travel between the two countries without a passport, only with a national ID card starting from March 1. 2019, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has reported.
