Dozens of photographs illustrating resorts across Georgia throughout the 20th century are on show at the exhibition pavilion of the National Archives of Georgia, bringing moments captured at locations known for their picturesque settings to viewers.

The snaps presented at the display feature locations ranging from the seaside town of Gagra in the now-occupied Abkhazia, the western town of Tskaltubo with its Soviet-era sanatoriums, and the town of Lagodekhi, boasting a sprawling natural reserve in the extreme east of the country.

Captured on lens between the 1920s and 2000, the selection of photographs covers seaside, mountainous and health resorts across the country, something Georgia used to be particularly recognised for during the Soviet era, when these locations were well-maintained. Organisers said the photographs featured both active and popular as well as lesser-known resorts.

Sanatoriums, tourist infrastructure, holiday retreats and people involved in the field of tourism throughout the decades are seen in the selected photos, with locations including the well-known Borjomi in central Georgia, Abastumani with its astronomical observatory in addition to resort qualities, and Sighnaghi in the winemaking province of Kakheti in the east.

Launched last Friday, the exhibition Resorts in Georgia will be open for viewing at the National Archives pavilion, located at 40, Pekini Avenue in Tbilisi, through September 13. Governmental regulations on COVID-19 precautions are in effect at the venue.
