A competition for Georgian filmmakers to come up with works on subjects of gender equality, domestic violence and violence against women has unveiled its finalists.

A joint project of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty and the European Union Project Supporting Georgian Inter-Agency Commission on Gender Equality, the contest called directors for three-minute works on the subjects.

As the first stage of the initiative came to a close, 17 films have been selected by a jury team of five professionals, with four eventual winners to be named later.

See 'Lala, a Car Mechanic', a film by Ketevan Kapanadze shortlisted for the contest:

Both professional and amateur filmmakers were involved in creating the shortlisted works, which feature subjects including inequality in families' treatment in their children of differing genders, violence against women in households and forced marriage.

Patricia Rosa Garcia, team leader of EU supporting the inter-agency Commission on Gender Equality, told Radio Liberty the project for film competition had "already achieved" its goals through motivating authors of submissions to work on the issues.

'One Out of Seven' is a short work by Mariam Agladze featuring victims of domestic violence:

She also said in comments to the RFU/RL website Georgia enjoyed "significant success" in its work on gender equality but the country still faced issues on topics the selected cinema projects concerned.

The winning entrant of the film competition is set to receive a money prize of 17,000 GEL (about 6,300 $/5,600 €), with second- and third-placed contestants also set to be honoured.

The directors will also have an opportunity to produce a feature-length version of their films in collaboration with Radio Liberty, with a fund of 7,000 GEL available for supporting the projects.
