Dolphin washed ashore in Ureki was not shot, Environmental Agency says

The Environmental Supervisory Agency of Georgia says that a dolphin which washed ashore on 25 February in the Georgian coastal town of Ureki was not shot dead, as many Facebook users claimed after a photo of the dolphin went viral.

The agency says that the photo which was released showed wounds on the dead dolphin, which triggered speculations that it may have been deliberately shot.

The body of the dolphin was transported to the Batumi delphinium and specialists stated that the wounds had been inflicted by birds or other mammals,” the agency says.

The agency reports that dead dolphins often wash ashore and that in 2018, 110-120 such dolphins were found on Georgian coasts.
