Gov’t allocates 20mln GEL for prevention of natural disasters

The Georgian government has approved the Natural Disaster Prevention Programme for which 20 million GEL will be allocated from the state budget.
The funding of any one project must not exceed one million GEL.
Projects must meet a mandatory criteria to receive funding.
They should provide detailed plans on how to prevent natural disasters in certain areas or how to decrease damage in the case of a disaster.
The projects will include plans to clean riverbeds from waste, set up of drainage systems and pipes, protection walls, bridge passages and others.
In order to prevent severe consequences of flooding in the village of Tchuberi, Svaneti, the National Environmental Agency of Georgia has installed hydrometeorological measuring devices on the Nenskra River.
The ice collapsed about 400 meters away from the glacier tongue yesterday and caused a large amount of water in the valley threatening the nearest rivers to flood. Specialists from the National Environmental Agency suggest that the collapse has been caused by the intense melting of the glacier during summer.
In about three years early warning systems will be installed throughout Georgia, enabling the population to receive relevant and timely information in a systematic way prior to disasters in order to make informed decisions and take action.
The Georgian Minister for Refugees Sozar Subari has stated that 21 houses and the local infrastructure have been heavily damaged in the village of Tchuberi in Mestia, on the second day of flooding of the river Nenskra.
Georgia is starting a new seven-year programme worth $32 million that will help the country to prevent natural disasters.
Severe hail has hit the town of Telavi and five villages in Kakheti region, eastern Georgia.
Heavy rain has hit Akhmeta and Lagodekhi municipalities in Kakheti region. About 1000 hectares of fruit trees and vineyards were damaged as the water level in River Alazani increased.
Georgian farmers will receive compensation for damage to crops caused by hail and severe weather conditions. A calculation of the total losses suffered this season is underway.
