The German Development Bank (KfW) will help the government of Georgia to implement energy reforms, announces the Ministry of Economy of Georgia.
Officials from the KfW and the Ministry of Economy signed a supporting loan agreement of a deal signed on June 15, 2019 to launch the Energy Sector Open Programme.
Deputy Minister of Economy David Tvalabeishvili said earlier in June that with annually increasing electricity consumption year after year, Georgia needs to have more energy l-generating facilities.
Having the appropriate electricity transmission infrastructure is of great importance as well. These are absolutely necessary steps that will lead us to energy security and the energy independence of Georgia”, he said.
A total of €100 million allocated by the German government for the implementation of the Energy Sector Open Programme is targeted at the expansion of the power transmission network and the strengthening of the energy system.
One of the main directions of the programme is the full repair of the power transmission network and substations in the Kakheti region of Georgia.
Construction of the cross-border infrastructure, which will further strengthen the energy supply of Georgia and facilitate export-import operations, is also planned as part of the programme.
The project implementation will start in 2020 and is scheduled to be completed by 2022.
The international consultancy company McKinsey&Company is helping Georgia create an energy development strategy, Georgia’s Ministry of Economy has announced.
The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is launching a new three-year energy program in Georgia to support the development of energy market in the country.
