The Georgian Interior Ministry has exposed 110 cases of child abuse by their parents from January to May 2019.

In 15 cases out of the 110, children were abused by their mothers while fathers/stepfathers were observed in the rest of the cases.

79% of the cases resulted in the detention of the parents.

Physical and permanent psychological violence as well as threatening took place.

Family members (mother or grandmother) notified police of the use of violence in most of the cases (62). In 23 cases, victims called for law enforcers themselves. Relatives or others did the same in the rest of the occasions.

37 persons received warnings for neglecting the legal interests of the children, for example, not providing them with proper care, not providing them with food as well as neglecting sanitary norms while the adults were in a position to provide for such.

The Interior Ministry reports that the family members appealed to the agency regarding the domestic violence cases more frequently in 2019 than in previous years.

A special coordination department was established in the Interior Ministry that is aimed at providing children with psychological assistance and helps them to engage in the investigation process more easily.
