Georgian Parliament Speaker Irakli Kobakhidze stated at a reception dedicated to Georgia’s Independence Day in Vilnius that the friendship of Lithuania and Georgia is special.
I am very glad to see so many friends of Georgia in Lithuania. Georgian and Lithuanian people enjoy many years of special friendship. 101 years ago, Georgia gained independence from Russia and it is a very special day for our country and people,” Kobakhidze said addressing the audience.
He said that unfortunately, the independence gained in 1918 lasted only three years but in 1991 the Georgian people managed to restore it.

Kobakhidze stated that the histories of Georgia and Lithuania are quite similar.
Lithuania started its fight for independence in the 19th century. Georgians and Lithuanians were fighting side by side against the Soviet regime for their independence, and the fight was a success. Now, Lithuania is a role model for us,” Kobakhidze said.
The event was organised by the Georgian Embassy to Lithuania.
While in Lithuania Kobakhidze also met the country's Defence Minister, when he stated that Lithuania is one of the key supporters of Georgia's NATO integration.
