Georgian soldiers return home from Afghanistan

The 22nd battalion of the 2nd Infantry Brigade of the Georgian Defence Forces who defended international peace and security in war-torn Afghanistan returned home to Georgia earlier today. 

The Georgian soldiers had left to Afghanistan last September to contribute to the NATO-led Resolute Support Mission.

  • The Resolute Support Mission currently consists of more than 16,000 troops from 39 NATO Allies and partners.
  • Georgia is the largest non-NATO contributor to the Resolute Support Mission with 870 troops.
  • The Resolute Support Mission was a follow-on task from the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) mission, to which Georgia contributed about 750 troops.

The 22nd battalion was tasked to defend the Bagram Base in Afghanistan. The battalion has now been replaced by the soldiers from the 43rd battalion of the 4th Mechanised Brigade.
