Georgia is starting the restoration and development of Krtsanisi forest park as part of the new state programme for biodiversity recovery launched today.

Krtsanisi forest park is located near Georgia’s capital city of Tbilisi, near the Rustavi highway and is spread over 210 hectares. The forest park has a unique ecosystem and biodiversity.

The main idea of creating Krtsanisi forest park in the 60s of last century was the maintenance of biodiversity and raising public awareness about environmental principles.

However, as Georgian Prime Minister Mamuka Bakhtadze said today at the presentation of the new state programme, over the last decades, green cover in the park has been decreased due to negligence.

Irresponsible policy and ignorance of environmental principles have put us in a very difficult reality and we are still fighting the consequences of this irresponsible policy… Today we are launching a very important project that will be praiseworthy for the future generations… Here [in Krtsanisi forest park] we will create a real live museum, where not only the unique flora and fauna will be presented, but we will cultivate plants from the red list”, said Bakhtadze.

Bakhtadze said that Krtsanisi forest park will be recreational area linking Tbilisi to Rustavi.

In the forest park movement will be possible only by walking, biking or by electric cars”, said Bakhtadze.

Georgian Minister of Environmental Protection and Agriculture Levan Davitashvili said at the presentation that two agencies of the ministry the Environmental Information and Education Centre and the National Agency of Wild Nature will be opened in the Krtsanisi forest park.
