Georgia’s population has slightly decreased, reaching 3,723,500 people as of January 1, 2019, says the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat).
Year-on-year (y/y) Georgia’s population decreased by 0.2%.
It should be mentioned that 2018 resulted in the positive natural increase (4,614) and negative net migration (-10,783)”, said Geostat.
Georgia's urban area is still more populated than rural. 58.7% of total population live in urban area and almost one third of total population (1,171,100 people) lived in the capital city of Tbilisi.
There are more women in Georgia than men. The data revealed 52% of Georgia’s population were female, while 48% were male.
Geostat said that compared to previous year, the number of male population as of January 1, 2019 remained almost unchanged and equalled 1,790,900 persons, while the number of female population decreased by 0.3% and totalled 1,932,600 persons.
Meanwhile, the latest data showed people aged 0-14 made up 20.3% of total population, while age group of 15-64 made up 64.9%. As for people aged 65 or more they made up 14.8% percent of total population.
It is worth mentioning, that under the age of 35 the number of men exceeds that of women, while women outnumber men in the age group of 35 and over, due to females’ higher life expectancy”, said Geostat.
Life extension was about 74 years in 2018. For male the average life extension was 69.7 years and for female – 78.2 years.
As of January 1, 2019 the median age of population equalled 37 years, said Geostat.
There were 98, 935 emigrants (15.8% increase y/y) and 88,152 immigrants (5.9% decrease y/y) in 2018.
In the same time period, 86.6% of emigrants and 84.5% of immigrants represent the working age population (15-64 year age group).
