Germany allocates €253m for sustainable development in Georgia

Germany is offering about €253 million to Georgia for sustainable development.
Georgia’s Finance Minister Mamuka Bakhtadze and German Ambassador to Georgia Heike Peitsch signed the financial agreement today.
The amount of funds provided by today’s agreement is a record and it clearly shows the importance of cooperation in the field of development between our countries”, said Peitsch.
The money will be spent on various projects, including vocational education, improving utility infrastructure in different regions of Georgia and expanding the power transmission network.
German Interior Minister Horst Seehofer told Deutsche Welle that Germany intends to add Georgia and Armenia to the list of safe countries, which means that no one from those countries will receive asylum in Germany.According to the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees of Germany, 3,462 citizens of Georgia and 3,857 citizens of Armenia applied for asylum in Germany last year.
The German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) is helping to strengthen local governance and democracy and to create the requisite legal and institutional frameworks in Georgia.
Germany’s Ambassador to NATO Hans-Dieter Lucas has signed a decree which envisages the allocation of €500,000 for certain projects of the Substantial NATO-Georgia Substantial Package (SNGP).
Germany is offering €140 million financial assistance to Georgia so the country can implement major investments projects in the country.
Georgian Interior Minister has discussed steps taken by Georgia towards reducing asylum seekers from the country with his German colleague Horst Seehofer pointing out that there is a positive dynamic in terms of a decrease in their number.
The Georgian Foreign Minister David Zalkaliani will hold his first official meeting in the post with his German counterpart Heiko Maas. Zalkaliani stated today that the meeting will concern bilateral relations and regional challenges, as well as Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic aspirations.
