Seven former prison employees sentenced for inhumane treatment of inmates

Tbilisi City Court has found seven former prison employees from Tbilisi Prison No. 8 guilty of torturing inmates.
The crimes were committed in between 2011-2012.
The Prosecutor’s Office stated that the individuals carried out acts of violence as soon as any prisoner was placed in the facility, insulting them verbally and assaulting them physically.
Later on, even afterwards, acts of physical retribution were systematic. The purpose of these acts was to guarantee the silent obedience of the prisoners,” the Chief Prosecutor’s Office said.
The court questioned about 50 former prisoners, who, at different times, were placed in the 8th prison.
The absolute majority of these prisoners were subject to physical violence for years. Additionally, twenty volumes of written and video evidence of the criminal case were examined,” the Office stated.
The detainees have been sent to prison for 3-9 years with varying degrees of severity based on the crimes they individually committed.
