Norway is going to open an embassy in Georgia, announces the Government of Norway.
Georgia is one of our priority partner countries in the Eurasia region. For many years, it has been following a course of reform, which has brought it closer to European and Euro-Atlantic cooperation structures”, said Minister of Foreign Affairs Ine Eriksen Soreide.
It is on the basis of an overall assessment of Norwegian interests and our ties with the countries in the Southern Caucasus that Norway has decided to open an embassy in Georgia. A permanent presence in Tbilisi will put us in a good position to follow developments in the region as a whole”, she added.
At the same time, the embassy in Baku, Azerbaijan will be closed and the embassy in Ankara, Turkey will then be responsible for Norway’s relations with Azerbaijan. However, Norway plans to establish an honorary consulate-general in Baku.
These changes to Norway’s representation in the Southern Caucasus will be implemented during 2019.
'Syria's decision to recognise the breakaway regions of Georgia is a violation of international law. Norway will maintain its support for Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity,' said the State Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Norway Audun Halvorsen.
The Kingdom of Norway is supporting the development of renewable energy sources in Georgia by approving $4 million for the country.
Norwegian Defence Minister Ine Eriksen Soreide is in Tbilisi today for her first official visit to Georgia. Georgian Defence Minister Levan Izoria hosted Soreide, and the pair signed a plan of bilateral cooperation for 2017.
Norway supports Georgia’s NATO membership and will remain faithful to this idea at the next summit of the Alliance.
The kingdom of Saudi Arabia is opening an Embassy in Georgia’s capital of Tbilisi in December 2018 in order to promote the relationship between the two countries, Georgia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reports.
