Tbilisi will be competing with two European cities for a right to host the final of the 2021 UEFA Europa League competition, the European football body revealed today.
The Georgian capital’s Dinamo Arena stadium could be selected as the destination of the final fixture of the club tournament, with the final decision to be made in May or June next year.
Tbilisi has been picked as a candidate for the final along with Vienna, with its Ernst Happel Stadium, and a yet to be confirmed venue in Seville.
UEFA revealed the interest of the Georgian city within an announcement that said 11 football associations from across Europe had expressed their wish to host finals for the four club competitions of the Europe-wide association.
Cities from Helsinki to Prague to Munich have registered the interest for being destinations for Europa League, Champions League, Super Cup and Women’s Champions League deciders.
The Dinamo Arena, bearing the name of celebrated Soviet Georgian player Boris Paitchadze, previously hosted the 2015 UEFA Super Cup final between Barcelona and Sevilla.
Tbilisi was also the city for UEFA Women's Champions League qualifying stage matches last year.
