New bill plans to expand Kazbegi National Park

Kazbegi National Park will be significantly expanded as a result of a bill supported by the Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Committee.

The bill, introduced by the Deputy Environment Minister Nino Tandilashvili, passed the first reading of the committee today.

The state budget will allocate funds to extend Kazbegi National Park, which will also involve hiring new employees and procuring new equipment, Nino Tandilashvili said.

If the bill passes, the territory of the park will increase from 69,518 hectares to 78,201 hectares. The Ministry of Environment has been working on the bill for two years with the support of the German government.

The Government of Germany expresses its commitment to allocate grants for the development of the management plans of the extended territory, infrastructural and touristic recreational projects with maximal involvement of the local population”, Tandilashvili added.
