The Ministry of Corrections has stated today that former Interior Minister Ivane (Vano) Merabishvili has been transported to Mediclub hospital in Tbilisi in the morning for additional blood checks, in order to dispel his lawyers’ speculations that Merabishvili could have been poisoned in prison or that he may have cancer.

The Ministry of Corrections reported that the results of 26 September analyses conducted in the Aversi clinic in Tbilisi showed amelioration of the Horner syndrome Merabishvili suffered as well as improvements in respiratory and eye problems.

Merabishvili has received all necessary medical service in different hospitals in Tbilisi, which excluded the presence of tumors in the body. In order to also dispel the lawyers’ statements on alleged poisoning of Merabishvili, today and tomorrow Merabishvili will be checked for such indications,” the Ministry of Corrections reported, and appealed to lawyers to respect the medical conclusions and refrain from further speculations when the final, medical conclusion is made available.

Minister of Justice Thea Tsulukiani has stated that Merabishvili “feels good” and the fact that he was transported to different hospitals for checks does not mean his health condition is complicated.

The United National Movement and its lawyers are trying to spread false information. No matter who is a patient, we [the current government] take all measures on time to prevent possible health problems in prisoners and take them for treatment and medical checks from the very beginning, even several times in different hospitals.

The attitude is strange for the United National Movement, which used to take prisoners to hospitals only when their health condition was critical,” Tsulukiani said.

In mid-September the Ministry of Corrections also responded to Merabishvili’s lawyers and made his diagnoses public.

The ministry reported that Merabishvili suffered from vasomotor rhinitis, Horner's syndrome and blepharoconjunctivitis.

  • Vasomotor rhinitis is inflammation of the membranes inside the nose; Horner's syndrome is a combination of symptoms that arises when a group of nerves called the sympathetic trunk is affected, while blepharoconjunctivitis refers to the irritation and inflammation of eyelids and conjunctiva.
