Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev says that Georgia’s accession to NATO may trigger "a terrible conflict" which will lead to catastrophic consequences.
In his interview with Kommersant, FM Medvedev also said that Georgia could avoid its conflict with Tskhinvali (South Ossetia), one of the breakaway regions of Georgia.
About a month ago Russian President Vladimir Putin also revealed his negative attitude towards Georgian NATO membership.
The Russian Foreign Ministry stated in its most recent statement that NATO-Georgia drills make the situation in the region tense.
Georgia was promised to become a NATO member during the 2008 NATO Bucharest summit.
NATO says that it stays loyal to its words.
