The United Kingdom will offer £5.5 million to support the sustainable development of democracy in Georgia.
The news was announced in the House of Lords of the United Kingdom today where issues related to Georgia’s territorial integrity were discussed.
For the first time the members of the House of Lords talked about "how to ensure that Russia respects Georgia's territorial integrity and withdraws its troops from the territory of Georgia”.
The Minister of State for the Commonwealth and United Nations at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Lord Ahmad Wimbledon answered questions pertaining to this issue. He was the one who announced the United Kingdom was going to offer more financial assistance to Georgia for democracy development.
The United Kingdom strongly supports Georgia's territorial integrity and sovereignty. Last year, Britain supported two of the United Nations’ resolutions, which state that Abkhazia and South Ossetia are parts of Georgia. We have also used OSCE statements to condemn Russia's actions in Georgia. We have sent observers to the EU Monitoring Mission in Georgia and help the country to effectively deal with Russian pressure through NATO and other international organisations,” said Lord Ahmad Wimbledon.
"Russia continues to intervene in Abkhazia and South Ossetia and I want to assure you that the British government is doing its best to stop this and use its entire international influence,” he added.
