Two of the Tbilisi-based Royal District Theatre’s most acclaimed productions are coming to the Deutsches Theater in Berlin over the next three days.
In the German capital, theatre-goers are invited to three shows of Prometheus. 25 Years of Independence and Women of Troy, stagings by the troupe’s Data Tavadze and Davit Gabunia.
The former production will be performed by eight actors of the company later today.
Can the biography of a single person depict the history of an entire country? Where does the borderline between biography and history blur?”, asks a summary of the play.
Premiered at the 2016 Tbilisi International Festival of Theatre, Prometheus has been a frequent bill in the Georgian theatre’s repertoire.
The Royal District Theatre describes it as a "bold, political play in which great tragedy occurs only to satisfy the cravings of their audience”.
In the other show, Tavadze’s award-winning staging Women of Troy will deliver to the Berlin stage a plot centred around the suffering of women in wartime.
The play saw the young director receive the principal award of the Fast Forward 2016 European Festival for Young Stage Directors in Germany.
Juries of the festival praised the "high sensitivity and precision that he showed in dealing with [...] the audience and, above all, the language that got a musical quality" in their decision.
Women of Troy features five actors of the troupe in a performance involving dramaturgy by Gabunia and Tavadze as well as music by Nika Pasuri.
Both of the Royal District Theatre plays will be hosted on the Deutsches Theater’s Kammerspiele stage, established by theatre director Max Reinhardt in the early 20th century to host modern drama.
