"It is Japan’s consistent position that the peaceful resolution of the issue concerning Tskhinvali region/South Ossetia and Abkhazia in Georgia in line with the principles of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognized borders is essential for peace and stability of the country and the entire South Caucasus region,” reads a press release published by Japan’s embassy to Georgia based in Tbilisi today.

This position is by no means affected by the ‘establishment of diplomatic relations’ by Syria with Tskhinvali region/South Ossetia and Abkhazia, which are parts of Georgia’s territory. Japan opposes any attempt to change Georgia’s internationally recognized borders.”

Earlier this week NATO, EU, the United States and other countries already condemned the decision of Syria and emphasised Russia’s role in the illegal step.

Georgia has started procedures to cut diplomatic relations with the Syrian Arab Republic.

The decision came after Syria officially recognised the independence of occupied Abkhazia and Tskhinvali regions on May 29, 2018.

Syria is the fifth after Russia, Venezuela, Nicaragua and Nauru which recognised the Georgian breakaway territories as independent republics in the wake of the Russia-Georgia 2008 war.

The rest of the international community is unanimous in the view that Abkhazia and South Ossetia are integral parts of Georgia.
