Gov’t announces free ID cards and passports at lower cost for Georgians in abroad

The Georgian Ministry of Justice announced today that Georgian citizens who live abroad will be able to receive ID cards for free and passports for $50.
The measure aims to make the election list more precise,” the Georgian Justice Minister Thea Tsulukiani stated today.
To take advantage of the offer Georgian citizens will have to address Georgian consulates in the countries they live in.
There will be no age-limit for receiving documents.
Today the Ministry of Justice sent an updated and corrected election data to the Central Election Commission (CEC), meaning officials will have a list accompanied by photos for the first time in its election history.
Issuing vital identification documents to Georgian citizens living abroad could soon get easier if Parliament approves a law change that will see a state agency oversee the currently complicated process.
Georgia and Ukraine are working to make it possible for their citizens to travel between the two countries without a passport, only with an ID card. As of today, Georgian and Ukrainian citizens do not need a visa to visit each other, but they do need to have a passport to cross the border.

The Georgian Constitutional Court has accepted a lawsuit of two citizens of Georgia on the rule of issuing identification documents in Georgia, and before the final verdict is delivered, people will be able to receive both electronic and non-electronic IDs.
