Gov’t prepares amendments against illegal migration in Georgia

The Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili announced today that the Justice Ministry has prepared amendments against illegal migration in Georgia.
The PM stated that the motivation for providing the changes is that some foreign nationals violate the law and benefit from Georgia’s loyal migration policy.
The amendment, which need to be approved by parliament, read that:
- A foreign national must live in Georgia for 10 years to receive a permanent residency permit. The term in the current law is 6 years.
- Foreign nationals will be able to receive a temporary residency permit for 12 years, instead of current six years. However, after six years, if they have no motive to stay in the country, they will again receive the temporary permit of residency and will not apply for the permanent residency.
- The Ministry of Economy of Georgia is working to raise the $15,000 limit for investors to receive a temporary residency permit.
Foreigners will be able to represent documents for obtaining residence permit in Georgia through the web-page https://services.sda.gov.ge or www.psh.gov.ge 24 hours a day from December 29.A Statement concerning the simplified procedural innovation has been made by the Public Service Development Agency (PSDA).

Stricter visa rules for foreign visitors wanting to spend time in Georgia will come into effect this autumn.
The Georgian parliament has approved a bill with its third and the final reading which provides for imprisonment as punishment for providing support to a Georgian citizen to stay illegally in a foreign country.
