Sumo: Georgia wins 16 medals at European Championship

A group of Georgian sumo wrestlers have won 16 medals at the 2017 European Sumo Championship in Georgia’s capital of Tbilisi.

Of the 16 medals, three were gold, three were silver and ten were bronze.

More than 300 sportsmen from 13 countries participated in the competition which was held this weekend.

Last year the Sumo Federation of Europe congress decided Georgia will host the 2017 Sumo European Championship.

Carried out under the government project ‘Check-in Georgia’, Georgia is also hosting a dozen of some other most anticipated international sports events throughout this year in an initiative encompassing cities and towns across the country.

The program of events includes 13 different tournaments and matches involving local and foreign athletes.

From March 31-September 25, six locations throughout the country will be hosting participants, audiences and international media coming together to watch the competitions.
