Publicist Vasil Maglaperidze has been selected as the new Director General of Georgia’s Public Broadcaster (GPB): the country’s state - funded television network.

The eight-member Board of Governors cast six votes in favor of Maglaperidze at today’s two - round secret ballot, thus defeating four other candidates for the position.

Commenting his election to the post, Maglaperidze said he would do his best to make the GPB "one of the main players in the media market”. He also said GPB has very high intellectual resources, which need to be well - organised.

After former Director General Giorgi Baratshvili announced his resignation from the position two years in advance of his six - year contract, five candidates were shortlisted for the vacancy in late 2016.

Those competing with Maglaperidze for the Director General's position were Nino Zautashvili - TV anchor at GPB, Zaal Anjaparidze - independent analyst, Tinatin Berdzenishvili - Acting Director General of GPB, head of GPB's multimedia department and Natia Kuprashvili - head of Georgian Association of Regional Broadcasters.

Established under the Georgian Law on Public Broadcasting, GPB's purpose is "to provide accurate and up-to-date information that is free from political and commercial bias and is shared without any hidden agendas. The programming seeks to address the needs and interests of the larger Georgian society through diversity of programs and viewpoints."
