Heavy snowfall triggers road closures in Georgia

Due to heavy snow and the threat of avalanches, some Georgian roads are closed today, the Roads Department of Georgia has announced.

The Gudauri-Kobi section of eastern Georgia’s Mtskheta-Stepantsminda-Larsi route is closed only to trailer units and semi-trailers. It is also prohibited to stop vehicles on the 134 km and 135 km of the same road section, which is the Dariali Gorge section.

Meanwhile, traffic is also prohibited for again the trailer unites and semi-trailers on the Tbilisi-Senaki–Leselidze section of the international importance road.

Also, the following road sections are closed for trailer unites, semi-trailers and vehicles that can carry more than 30 passengers today in Georgia:

  • Khashuri-Akhaltsikhe-Vale (80km-97km at Turkey’s border)
  • Akhaltsikhe-Ninotsminda (90km-112 km at Armenia’s border)
  • Akhalkalaki-Kartsakhi (1km-36km at Turkey’s border)

Other types of vehicles can travel on these sections of roads with anti-skid chains, while the road is open to off-road vehicles.

Some domestic roads are also closed in Georgia today, however the Roads Department said that works to clean the roads would begin as soon as it stopped snowing.
