Nino Lomjaria, former deputy head of the State Audit Office and an ex-chairperson of the International Society for Fair Elections and Democracy (ISFED), has become the new public defender of Georgia.

Lomjaria was named by the Georgian Dream ruling party and she was able to gain the support of 96 lawmakers at today’s voting in the legislative body.

Only five MPs voted against her in the 150-member parliament.

Her opponent Giorgi Popkhadze, named by the Alliance of Patriots parliamentary minority, received 20 votes, while 27 voted against him.

Lomjaria will replace Ucha Nanuashvili in the role for the next five years.

Lomjaria was offered to the ruling party as a new public defender by the civil sector.
