Georgia condemns Nauru president’s visit to occupied Abkhazia

Georgia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has released a statement condemning Nauru’s President Baron Waqa’s recent visit to occupied Abkhazia, in Georgia’s west.
The Foreign Ministry has immediately informed the international community of the illegal visit,” the ministry reported. "We strongly condemn the visit to Abkhazia which is now occupied by Russia. Nauru president’s decision to visit Abkhazia is a blatant violation of international law”.
The foreign ministry underscored that Nauru, Venezuela and Nicaragua are the only nations which "either by ignorance of international legislation or pressure from Russia” have recognised Georgia’s occupied territories of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) as independent republics.
The international community will never approve Russia’s attempts to achieve the recognition of Georgia’s historic lands as independent republics,” the ministry said.
The foreign ministry emphasized that the countries influenced by Russia to take illegal steps would permanently face international pressure until they act in line with the international law.
Nauru’s president visited Abkhazia on November 12 and spoke about the pressure from the US as they recognized Abkhazia, the Abkhazian media reported.
In May this year, US President Donald Trump signed an act that declares Abkhazia and South Ossetia as Russian-occupied territories belonging to Georgia.
The act prohibits financial support for countries which recognize the two regions as independent republics.
High officials of Georgia’s two breakaway regions Abkhazia and South Ossetia recognize the results of a referendum held in Crimea on March 16.
