Georgia's Nino Batsiashvili has become the latest chess player from Georgia to attain the title of an international chess Grandmaster after finishing strongly in the newly concluded Isle of Man International tournament on Sunday.

Batsiashvili claimed the status after exceeding the 2500 rating threshold required for the Grandmaster title while competing at the event against some of the top male players of the world.

The result means she has become the 36th woman player to attain the title, and fifth from Georgia.

Georgian women Grandmasters include Nona Gaprindashvili, Maia Chiburdanidze, Nana Dzagnidze and Bela Khotenashvili.

Batsiashvili will be formally granted the status at the next World Chess Federation (FIDE) Congress, set to be held on October 7.

The Isle of Man International was won by World Champion Magnus Carlsen on Sunday.

Batsiashvili scored a memorable draw with Carlsen at the 2015 Masters Open tournament in Qatar and was named by the FIDE among the world's top 100 female and male players in 2014.
