Georgia’s capital of Tbilisi continues to rapidly develop, with renovation projects of the old, historic city, new tourist routes and more recreation zones being added for locals and visitors.

After the completion of the first part of the ‘New Tiflis’ project, Tbilisi City Hall plans to begin renovating buildings located near Orbeliani square.

In 2017 we will start the second stage of the New Tiflis project. We have successfully completed the first stage of the project, where we renovated 51 historical building on Aghmashenebeli Ave, of which 41 have cultural heritage status”, said Tbilisi Mayor David Narmania today, while summing up 2016 and revealing plans for 2017.

Developing and upgrading public transport in Tbilisi is one of the top priorities and challenges facing Tbilisi City Hall currently. Narmania said 143 new buses would be added to the Tbilisi public transport service by April 2017. As of today, there are 522 buses operating in Tbilisi of which 25 are new – all of which are more environmentally-friendly than the current yellow busses as they run on compressed natural gas.

Narmania also brought up the development of Tbilisi’s ropeway transportation system. The mayor announced that Tbilisi City Hall would begin renovating the Mtatsminda cabin road this year. Narmania also mentioned the renovated cable car to Turtle Lake that was restored to serve Tbilisi locals and guests in October 2016 after a seven-year break.

Tbilisi City Hall also plans to develop road infrastructure too. This year about 600 streets will be rehabilitated in Tbilisi, while last year 500 streets were fixed, said Narmania.

Embracing environmental changes for a better future is another challenge for Tbilisi City Hall this year. Narmania said Tbilisi will ‘go green’ and become an ecologically clean city with healthy and attractive environments. He said 180,000 plants have been planted last year in Tbilisi.

The mayor summed up the conference by praising the success of the implementation of cultural and sport projects in Tbilisi last year.
