8 Georgian wines win highest awards at top Japanese wine contest

The unique taste of Georgian wine is making an impression in Japan, where this week eight local wine producers won highest awards at a prestigious wine competition.

The top platinum medal and Regional Trophy went to Saperavi 2015 by Chigogidze Wines at the 20th Japan Wine Challenge, an event regarded as one of the oldest and the most prestigious wine competitions in Asia.

Meanwhile, the Vaziani Company won two gold medals and a Regional Trophy.

Another Georgian company Badagoni and Chigogidze Wine received silver medals.

As for the bronze medals, three different wines of Badagoni deserved the prestigious awards.

Platinum:

  • Chigogidze Wines Saperavi 2015

Gold:

  • Vaziani Company MAKASHVILI WINE CELLAR MTSVANE 2016
  • Vaziani Company MAKASHVILI WINE CELLAR KHIKHVI 2016

Silver:

  • Badagoni GAU#5 WHITE ONE 2015
  • Chigogidze Wines Aleksandrouli 2015

Bronze:

  • Badagoni BADAGONI BRUT 2015
  • Badagoni MAESTRO SAPERAVI 2015
  • Badagoni SAPERAVI RESERVE 2010

Regional Trophy:

  • Chigogidze Wines Saperavi 2015 (Best Georgian Red Wine)
  • Vaziani Company Makashvili Wine Cellar Khikhvi 2016 (Best Georgian White Wine)

Just over 1,700 wines of about 200 wine companies were entered and judged in the contest by a panel of leading wine professionals from Japan and across the world.

The official awards ceremony will be held on November this year or in February 2018 in Japan.
