The United National Movement (UNM) opposition, the party which ran Georgia in 2003-2012, named its top two candidates in Tbilisi for the upcoming local elections in the autumn.

Zaal Udumashvili, former anchor and one of the key faces of Rustavi 2 private broadcaster,  was named as the party’s mayoral candidate today, while the UNM lawmaker Nikanor (Nika) Melia will run for the head of Tbilisi City Council.

I have made a solution and I am getting involved in a decisive battle to save Tbilisi,” Udumashvili stated today in the yard of Metekhi church, in central Tbilisi, during the party assembly.

Udumashvili vowed he would meet with Tbilisi residents to listen to their problems and settle "a range of problems” the capital Tbilisi and its residents are facing currently.

Udumashvili named the hard socioeconomic situation, ecological problems, infrastructural drawbacks, chaotic construction and others as his targets to address when elected in the role.

The European Georgia opposition has already named Elene Khoshtaria as its candidate for the mayoral race.

Several key figures of the Georgian Dream ruling team have stated they would name current Energy Minister Kakha Kaladze as their nominee for the Mayor’s post.
