Georgia’s ruling Georgian Dream party says that a consensus has been reached within the party to hold the next parliamentary elections through the mixed electoral system.

This means that some of Members of Parliament will be elected through a proportional election system while others will be elected through a proportional election system during the parliamentary elections in 2020.

This is the system Georgia has been using, but the Georgian Dream says there will still be a novelty in 2020. Specifically, the five percent threshold to enter Parliament will be lowered to a three percent threshold.

Georgian Parliament Speaker Irakli Kobakhidze spoke about changes to the election system after Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili and the parliamentary majority met yesterday.

Kobakhidze said that despite the fact that the old election system will be maintained with minor changes for the 2020 elections, a major change will be ahead for elections after 2020.

He said that after 2020, parliamentary elections will be held through only a proportional system with bonus additions.

Head of the parliamentary majority Archil Talakvadze said that yesterday’s discussions covered presidential elections too. He said that the ruling party is ready to hold the presidential elections in 2018 through a direct election system, meaning voters will directly cast ballots for the person they desire to see elected.
