Russia-controlled soldiers detained 40-year-old Jumber Bekauri in the village of  Arbo today, near  the country’s eastern de facto Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) region.

Part of the locals say the man visited his relative in the village and he was abducted from the territory currently controlled by Georgia.

Others say the man may have used a wrong route and accidently appeared in the occupied territory, where he was detained and transported to Tskhinvali detention facility.

Yesterday the occupants also detained a Georgian man.

  • Russia recognized Georgian regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali as independent republics in the wake of the Russia-Georgia 2008 war.
  • Over 130 people were detained by Russia-controlled guards patrolling the occupation line in 2016, based on information released by Georgia’s State Security Service.
  • Detainees are usually released after their families pay a fee of about 2,000 rubles (about 90 GEL or $35).
