A new documentary film by Georgian director Salome Jashi has triumphed at the Nyon International Film Festival in Switzerland after making its world debut at the prestigious film event last week.

The Dazzling Light of Sunset won the Best New Film after being shown to international audiences for the first time at the festival – also known as the Visions du Reel. The feature-length documentary was a co-production between Georgia and Germany.

The festival's jury awarded Jashi's film the top prize of the New Look section after two days of screening, starting April 20.

The Nyon International Film Festival is Switzerland’s largest cinema event. This year the festival presented 180 films from 49 countries, including 90 world premieres.

Berlin-based Jashi worked on the feature-length documentary as director and scriptwriter. Most of the film was shot in Tsalenjikha town in western Georgia.

The documentary turned the lens on a small Georgian community with "a kaleidoscope of characters, places and happenings" to illustrate their life and values, stated the film's preview from Visions du Reel.

The win is a new recognition for Jashi, whose 2011 documentary Bakhmaro received an Honorary Mention at the 2011 Leipzig International Festival for Documentary and Animated Film in Germany.

She was also named as one of the judges of the 2015 edition of the German festival.

This year's Nyon International Film Festival ran from April 14-23.
