New protected territories are being established in two regions of Georgia in a bid to protect and maintain the natural flora and fauna.
The Protected Areas in Racha region will be created by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources Protection of Georgia, the Agency of Protected Areas and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).
The WWF will carry out research over the next few years, until 2018 in the framework of a grant to fund the projects.
Our goal is to help the Agency of Protected Areas fulfil its international obligations, which state 12 percent of Georgia’s territory should be covered with Protected Areas by 2020,” said regional director of WWF in the Caucasus Giorgi Sanadiradze.
Meanwhile the Muradi Cave in Racha might be given the status of natural monument once the full site is surveyed. Its main hall was discovered in 2014.
The Protected Areas project will carried out with financial support from Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
