Award-winning Georgian-German documentary When the Earth Seems to Be Light is being celebrated at several international festivals over the next three weeks in Germany, Austria and Canada.

The feature documentary, directed by Salome Machaidze, Tamuna Karumidze and David Meskhi, is about young skaters who are inspired by ideas on life but are struggling to cope with their everyday reality.

The film will enjoy its German premiere in two screenings at the 16th goEast Festival of Central and East European Films in Wiesbaden.

Specifically, When the Earth Seems to Be Light will be screened at the festival on April 21 and 22 at Caligari FilmBuehne and Apollo Kinocenter venues.

The feature film was selected by festival organisers to be part of the goEast competition section as one of 17 films from countries including Czech Republic, Romania and Ukraine.

The section will also include the documentary The Dazzling Light of Sunset from Georgian director Salome Jashi.

Following on from the German premiere, When the Earth Seems to Be Light will make its Austria debut at the Crossing Europe Film Festival in Linz.

On April 23 and 24, the festival's documentary competition category will screen the film alongside nine other works from across Europe.

The Crossing Europe festival's organisers said the event was dedicated to "idiosyncratic, contemporary and socio-political auteur cinema from Europe".

Following this, early next month cinema-lovers in North America will be able to see the Georgian-German documentary when it debuts in Canada.

The film will be screened three times – on May 2, 4 and 7 – at the HotDocs Canadian International Documentary Festival.

When the Earth Seems to Be Light claimed the Best First Appearance prize at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam last year.

The documentary also screened at the 2015 Tbilisi International Film Festival.
