Kiev honours Georgians killed by Soviet Russia on April 9, 1989

A special place in one of the recreational parks in Ukraine’s capital now commemorates the victims of the April 9, 1989 tragic events in Tbilisi, Georgia.

Trees were planted at Vidradny Park in Kiev to honour the memory of the Georgians who were killed by Russian troops as they supported the independence of Georgia 27 years ago.

The same park will soon feature a Georgia-Ukraine friendship alley.

Today Georgia’s Ambassador to Ukraine Mikheil Ukleba, officials from the Kiev government, Ukrainian school children and Georgian diaspora in Ukraine gathered at the park to plant the first tree in memory of the victims of Soviet aggression.

On April 9, 1989, at least 20 people were tragically killed as Soviet troops attacked peaceful protesters in the centre of Tbilisi.

The date has been etched into the minds of locals and friends’ of Georgia, and is remembered as the day of National Unity.

At 4am on April 9, special task units of the Soviet Army crushed protestors who were rallying to demand the independence of Georgia. The Russian troops also used chemical weapons, which resulted in hundreds being poisoned and long-term health damage on victims.
