Georgian films in focus at London screenings

The 2013 film In Bloom by directors Nana Ekvtimishvili and Simon Gross is among four Georgian productions at the White Horse program in London.

Four celebrated Georgian films dating from the Soviet era to contemporary cinema are screening at a special event hosted by east London's Deptford Cinema venue.

The cinema theatre was hosting the films within the White Horse: Films from Georgia program that opened on January 3 and was aimed at highlighting rich legacy and creative forces of the Georgian cinema.

Culture review website The Calvert Journal previewed the program and announced its opening through its Twitter account:

Late director Tengiz Abuladze's 1987 masterpiece Repentance and 1985 cinema version of a Georgia folk tale The Legend of the Suram Fortress by directors Sergei Parajanov and Dodo Abashidze represent the Soviet history of the country's cinematography.

Alongside the two historical works are two contemporary films selected by the event's organisers.

In Bloom by Nana Ekvtimishvili and Simon Gross wasa 2013 production that appeared at the Berlin International Film Festival, among other events, while filmmaker Jason Osborn's 2009 work Songs of Georgia represented a documentary piece about Georgian culture and folklore.

The White Horse program will run at the London venue until January 17.
