The United States Agency of International Aid (USAID) is eager to support Georgia continue carrying out democratic reforms.

The aid agency’s readiness was expressed by USAID Administrator Gayle Smith as she met Georgia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Mikheil Janelidze in Washington D.C. on March 18.

Janelidze thanked Smith for the agency’s vital support and contribution to Georgia’s democratic and economic development.

At the meeting special focus was on the organisation’s role in encouraging Georgia’s private sector and economic development, as well as strengthening the rule of law, human rights, democratic governance and civil society in Georgia.

The duo highlighted yet another important initiative – the $13 million USD ‘Inclusive and Sustainable Development of the Country’ project, signed in December 2015, that outlined development of Georgia’s education sector, infrastructure, agriculture, the private sector and environmental protection.

The project also provided measures towards resolving conflicts and achieving reconciliation.

Other ongoing projects contributing to the development of energy infrastructure, improvement of economic opportunities and support for internally displaced people were also discussed.

Janelidze informed the USIAD official about the Georgian Prime Minister’s four-point reform program, the action taken to improve Georgia’s business environment, implementation of infrastructure projects, education sector reforms and formation of a more effective governance system.

Discussions also focused on the upcoming US-Georgia Strategic Partnership Commission meeting for Working Group for Economic, Trade and Energy, scheduled to take place on April 12, 2016, where specific issues related to trade and economic relations, as well as regional cooperation, will be discussed.

USAID is the lead US government agency that works to end extreme global poverty and enable resilient, democratic societies to realize their potential.

It first began supporting Georgia in 1992. The aid agency’s website stated USAID currently supported 51 active projects in all areas of Georgia.
