Today Georgia is celebrating a special day honouring mothers and pregnant women – Mother’s Day.
Each year since 1991 Georgia has celebrated this annual day with a public holiday, and also encouraged the gifting of cards, flowers and gifts to their loved ones.
The purpose of Mother's Day is to maintain the tradition of respect for women, to value their role in the family and appreciate their enduring efforts in the upbringing of children.
Today several Georgian high officials post colourful cards on their Facebook page walls to all mothers and future mothers on this day.
Celebrating Mother’s Day in Georgia was established following a suggestion by the country’s first President Zviad Gamsakhurdia and in 1991 the decision to celebrate the occasion was approved by the Supreme Council of Georgia.
Each year Mother’s Day is celebrated on different days in different countries. Georgia is the second country in the world to celebrate Mother’s Day, which is celebrated annually on March 3.
Norway is the first country to celebrate Mother’s Day each year – this year the event was marked on February 14. Norway, like many other European countries, celebrates Mother’s Day on the second Sunday in February.
