Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) Jens Stoltenberg says Georgia is one of NATO’s closest partners and the Alliance is ready to offer continued support for the country.

Today the NATO top official announced the next NATO-Georgia Commission meeting will be held on Thursday, February 11. The meeting will address bilateral relations between Georgia and the Alliance, and Georgia’s efforts to move closer to NATO.

Georgia is one of NATO’s closest partners,” Stoltenberg said at a press conference in Brussels, Belgium, where Georgia’s PM is currently on an official visit.
[Georgia] is pursuing domestic political and security reforms, which are bringing Georgia closer to NATO,” he said.

At the Wales Summit in 2014, NATO agreed to grant Georgia a Substantial Package and to support the country in areas such as planning, air defence, maritime security and cyber defence.

We will discuss the progress made and how we can further increase our support for Georgia,” Stoltenberg underscored.

He added Georgia’s domestic political and security reforms will also be high on the agenda of the Commission meeting.

In August 2008 at an extraordinary meeting of NATO Foreign Ministers, the Alliance member states decided to establish the NATO-Georgia Commission.

The Commission represents a forum for political consultations and a mechanism for practical cooperation between NATO and Georgia, which aims to assist Georgia in its integration process. The Commission facilitates NATO-Georgia political dialogue and the deepening of cooperation at all levels.
