Georgia’s Minister of Health, Labour and Social Affairs has been elected as a new member of the Executive Board of the World Health Organisation (WHO).

The decision came today, on the final day of the 66th session of the WHO Regional Committee for Europe, which brought together health ministers and high level representatives of the 53 member states of the WHO European Region, partner organisations and civil society.

For the next three years Georgia’s David Sergeenko will be the Executive Board’s representative for the European Region. The WHO Executive Board is composed of 34 technically qualified members who provide agendas for World Health Assemblies and send resolutions to the Health Assembly.

The session of the Regional Committee for Europe, which is WHO’s decision-making body in the European space, launched on September 12 and is due to end later today. The meeting took place in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Georgia’s Health Minister spoke at the session yesterday about his Ministry’s efforts and achievements in Georgia.

Sergeenko stressed the importance of the General Healthcare Program provided by the current Government of Georgia and the Hepatitis C Elimination Program.

He noted it had been more than a year since the Hepatitis C Elimination Program was launched, and in that time more than 15,000 patients had received free treatment.

More than 10,000 patients have already been completely cured,” Sergeenko added.

He noted Georgia was ready to share its experience with other nations about the program so they too can implement similar schemes in their own countries.

The WHO has offices in more than 150 countries. WHO staff work side-by-side with governments and other partners to ensure the highest attainable level of health for all people, all over the world.
