Georgian wrestler wins bronze at judo grand prix

Georgian wrestler Vazha Margvelashvili collected a bronze medal for his country at the international Judo Grand Prix Havana 2016 competition that finished on Sunday in Cuba's capital.

Margvelashvili finished third in the 66 kg category of the tournament that featured 386 competitors from 66 nations.

The Georgian defeated local favourite Gilberto Solar, Spainish wrestler Sugoi Uriarte and Algerian athlete Houd Zourdani in the preliminary round.

He then faced France's Loic Korval in the semi-final round but lost, with Korval going on to become the 2015 European Champion.

Margvelashvili's final opponent in the tournament's bronze medal match was Sebastian Seidl of Germany.

The final results saw Margvelashvili take third place, behind Russia's Kamal Khan-Magomedov in second and Korval in first place.

The Georgian wrestler added his latest prize to his collection of bronze medals won at the 2015 Grand Prix Dusseldorf and European Open Cluj Napoca.

Georgia fielded two other judokas in the Grand Prix Havana. Aleksandre Mskhaladze and Guram Tushishvili took part in the 100 kg section took were both eliminated after two rounds.

The Grand Prix tournament ran from January 22-24.
