Tchaikovsky's life and work was closely linked with Georgia.
Tchaikovsky visited Georgia five times during his life and had fond memories of the country, Tiflis in particular (the city was renamed Tbilisi in 1936).
"Recalling my three month journey, Tiflis brings the warmest memories. Not so often in my life did I have moments of that much happiness,” confessed the composer in one of his letters.
It was in Georgia when he started to think about the ballet Sleeping Beauty, and operas Iolanta, The Queen of Spades and where the first night of the opera The Enchantress took place.
It is considered that without Georgia, Tchaikovsky might not have composed some of his masterpieces, especially the Arab dance in the balletThe Nutcracker, where Tchaikovsky used the traditional melody from the Georgian lullaby Iavnana.
