Georgia’s PM continues meetings with top EU officials

After meeting with European Council President Donald Tusk in Belgium, Georgia’s Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili has held a number of official meetings with other high ranking EU representatives.

Garibashvili met the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker.

With Mogherini Garibashvili discussed Georgia's effective implementation of the Visa Liberalisation Action Plan (VLAP), the current situation in the region and the danger facing Georgia's territorial integrity; while with Juncker he talked about the reforms considered by the Georgia-EU Association Agenda, the country's expectations from the upcoming Eastern Partnership Summit in terms of visa liberalisation and the current situation in the region.

At the meeting with Mogherini Georgia’s PM spoke about the reforms carried out by the Government which aimed at strengthening the economy and democratic institutions.

Prime Minister Garibashvili said Georgia will do everything it can to ensure positive results in terms of the visa liberalisation issue so that Georgia can become an example of success at the Riga Summit.

Garibashvili reiterated Georgia's European and Euro-Atlantic course was the choice of the country's people and it was "irreversible".

Mogherini expressed satisfaction with Georgia's successful implementation of the first phase of the VLAP and stressed the role of Georgia in international missions of the EU.

Meanwhile the leader of Georgian Government reassured Juncker, President of the European Commission, that Georgia's European choice was irreversable and the Association Agreement was not the final goal of Georgia's relations with the EU.

With Juncker Garibashvili discussed the latest developments in Georgia's occupied territories and condemned Russia's signing of agreements with Georgia's breakaway Abkhazia and Tskhinvali (South Ossetia) regions.

They also spoke about the developments in Ukraine and regional security. The Prime Minister expressed his concern about the crisis in Ukraine and noted Russia's actions were "aggravating the situation" connected with security in Europe.

After each meeting Garibashvili invited Mogherini and Juncker to Georgia.
