The Government of Georgia is upgrading the living conditions and offering new homes to Georgian Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) - people who were forced from their homes due to conflicts on Georgian soil.

At today’s Governmental meeting Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Garibashvili said 347 internally displaced families would be gifted private ownership of accommodation in various parts of Georgia before the end of the year.

He said the new homes would be located in eastern areas of Tbilisi, Mtskheta, Rustavi, Marneuli and the western territories of Kutaisi, Senaki, Abasha, Tskaltubo , Chkhorotsku and Khobi.

Furthermore, before the New Year holiday ended several IDPs would be gifted properties within the nine apartment buildings in the Olympic Village, near Tbilisi Sea.

After the 2015 European Youth Olympic Festival, held in Tbilisi in July, the local government purchased several accommodations blocks from developer Hauling Group, to offer back to IDPs, as many currently lived in sub-standard conditions in temporary housing settlements.

Georgia’s Minister of Internally Displaced Persons from the Occupied Territories, Accommodation and Refugees Sozar Subari said before December 31, 330 internally displaced families would be offered flats in the Tbilisi Sea Olympic Village, while another 300 would be gradually moved into the area from February to June 2016.

In total, this and next year 1,100 homes would be granted to IDPs.
