A cunning criminal has brazenly stolen 10 million GEL from one of Georgia’s main banks but local police have returned most of the stolen money after finding it in the basement of a Tbilisi apartment.

Bank of Georgia employee Ilai Gelashvili allegedly stole the money from the Bank’s storage room on October 24 while he was carrying out his work duties. However this has not been officially confirmed by police.

Georgian law enforcement officers found the money in the basement of an apartment of a man and women who have only been identified as Malkhaz B and Tamar K. The pair were detained and Gelashvili is now wanted by Georgian police.

Police claimed after Gelashvili allegedly stole the money from the Bank of Georgia’s office on Pushkin St in central Tbilisi, he made an agreement with his accomplices to hide the money in their apartment. The money, in GEL, USD and Euro, was separated into several boxes and bags and hidden in the apartment.

Georgia law enforcement bodies launched a robbery case into the crime.

Officials said a large portion of the stolen money had been returned to Bank of Georgia.
